An investment that brings… many things!

In the village of Unterstorcha in the Austrian region of Styria, the success story of the Schiefer farm has been in the writing since the 1960s. At that time, the foundations were laid for raising chickens, which the Schiefers carefully developed and upgraded into a modern agricultural activity over the years. Today, the farm boasts four houses that raise 700,000 chickens a year and 100 hectares of farmland.

Sustainable growth

The Schiefer farm is a place of rich tradition and continuous development. Their primary activity is raising chicken, which began in 1967 and whose demand has been steadily increasing in recent years. “Increasing demand is driving us to develop and expand the farm,” says Karl Schiefer, who runs the farm with his son-in-law Silvester and his family. In 2021, they built a new house, which allowed them to increase capacity and provide optimal conditions for breeding. “Quality chicken breeding requires a properly equipped house,” stresses Karl. From day one, the chickens on Schiefer’s farm are raised in modern houses, where they are given all the care they need for healthy development. After 40 days of feeding, the chickens are ready for sale and delivered to the local processor ‘Geflügel Titz’. Such a cycle is repeated up to seven times a year, meaning that the Schiefers raise and sell about 700,000 chickens a year.

Crops in exchange for feed

In addition to high-quality chicken farming, the Schiefer farm also produces classic crops such as corn, wheat, soybeans and pumpkins on 100 hectares of farmland. They sell most of the crop to the local supplier ‘Lugitsch Farm Feed Food’ or exchange it directly for chicken feed, as they need about 2,500 tonnes of feed for their 700,000 chickens. “We try to give our chickens the best possible quality of life. The well-being and health of the chickens, which is directly reflected in the quality of the meat, is ensured by light, low animal density and free movement and, of course, a well-chosen diet,” points out Silvester, who is already following in his father’s footsteps and continuing the family tradition. Most of the work on the Schiefer farm is done by the family, but they hire additional workers in case of increased workload.

Buying instead of renting

Recognizing the importance of modern equipment for achieving optimal results, they invest in new equipment as needed. Before the start of this year’s season, they took care of some reinforcement with a new acquisition – the Megafex 1800 universal spreader by Farmtech. The purchase decision was taken after careful consideration and due to an urgent need, since the farm produces more than 2,000 cubic metres of chicken manure per year, which has to be stored and then spread. “Until now, we rented the spreader, but this turned out to be impractical and irrational in the long term,” says Karl. “In addition, we were dependent on the availability of the spreader, which sometimes made our work difficult and caused unnecessary delays. Now we can use the spreader whenever we need it,” he adds proudly.

The Schiefer family is betting on Farmtech

The Schiefer family has a long history of trusting Farmtech. They have been successfully using the ZDK 1800 two-axle trailer in their vehicle fleet for almost 20 years and they are extremely satisfied with it. Therefore, when buying a new spreader, it was easier to choose a machine of the same brand. “The quality of the Farmtech machines is exceptional,” stressed Karl. “We were also convinced by the favorable price-quality ratio compared to the competition,” added his son Silvester. The new Megafex 1800 spreader has also proved its worth after just a few runs. “We are impressed with its performance, spread pattern and user-friendliness,” says Karl, who is confident that the investment will pay off. He knows the secret: If you want to reap, you must sow!

More comfort and improved efficiency

The Megafex 1800 spreader, equipped with a universal spreading device and an additional silage door, gives the Schiefer farm more areas of application. It is intended for the spreading of organic fertilizers as well as for a range of other transport tasks. “This machine will allow us to be more efficient, save time and work comfortably all year round,” says Karl. “In addition, it will be of great help for longer journeys during periods of seasonal surpluses.” An important aspect of the purchase was also the hydraulic spread-width limiter on the spreader, which enables controlled manure spreading near the border. This is especially important since Schiefer farm has several lots along the main road. At the official handover, appropriate training was provided together with the authorized dealer Gady. “The support of both means a lot to us. They are always there to support and help us”, he concludes.
